Studying as an international student in the Tourism and Travel program at Sheridan has been one of the best experiences I’ve had to learn and grow as a young professional within the industry. Experiencing new cultures, traditions, places and people in Canada is similar to what I feel my experience will be like working in the travel industry and that’s why I feel so passionate about my time at Sheridan. However, I didn’t make my experience at Sheridan a typical one. I decided to go outside the classroom and get connected with the Faculty and my fellow students through clubs and associations. I ended up becoming one of the Student Leaders for the 2015-16 academic year as Sheridan Student Union Awareness Coordinator for Trafalgar Campus and one of Marketing’s Social Community Leaders.

I believe that being involved in activities at school helps you develop different skills and opens up many new opportunities, which is exactly what I experienced. One of those experiences was working towards becoming a Baxter Student Ambassador, a program run through Baxter Travel Media – the flagship organization of Travel Courier and Travel Press Magazines – in collaboration with Sheridan. The program is catered to graduating students and encourages young people to get involved in their industry and mentor other young professionals. To secure this opportunity as the Baxter Student Ambassador for Sheridan I needed to ensure I had strong academic standing, lots of industry involvement at events, travel expos and with associations, volunteer outside of the college, and then present an industry-themed webinar on travel to Curaçao to Baxter program representatives.

In April 2016 I found out I was awarded the Baxter Student Ambassador Award for Sheridan. This opportunity comes with many great prizes including an eight-day trip for two to the Grand Riviera Princess All Suites Resort & Spa in Riviera Maya in Mexico, a profile in the May 5 issue of Travel Courier distributed to over 38,000 travel industry subscribers, an eight-week Sandals internship in St. Lucia, and more. The Baxter Student Ambassador Program has been a stepping stone for my professional career. Before I start my internship in St. Lucia I will be working for my dream company Banff Lake Louise Tourism as its Visitor Experience Specialist.
As I look back on my time at Sheridan, my proudest achievements are the leadership roles I’ve had within the community, which allowed me to make an impact and inspire others while completing my studies. Taking every opportunity available to me and challenging myself by dropping any fears or apprehensions has been the key to my success as a student, as a leader and as a young professional ready to start a new chapter in Canada.
